It’s never too late to change norms; even a tradition spanning over 97 years can find itself in transition. Case in point: Miss America scraps off its swimsuit round, carving a milestone in the social fabric of the 21st century in the process.

America’s own beauty and fashion feast, Miss America gears up to usher in an age of revolution in the pageant world, as it associates itself with the #MeToo movement under the helm of chairwoman, Gretchen Carlson. The elimination of the swimsuit round from the entire structure marks a shift in the evaluation process; a barometer of physical looks has now been supplanted with an interactive exchange between the contestant and judges. The infamous bikini portion will now enclose a more conscious and substantial parameter, with the contestant required to bring into focus her achievements, ambitions, and goals and the ingenious route, which will push her to act as Miss America in an empowered way.

The landmark decision comes along with other notable changes, which will be put into effect from next year.

The pageant will now open its doors to women of all shapes and sizes, challenging how one ‘ought’ to look. "We will no longer judge our candidates on their outward physical appearance. That's huge," Carlson delineated. The structural change was first announced on Good Morning America, followed by a confirmation on the official Twitter handle.

The symbolic step comes after a change of leadership in the Miss America Organisation, with the top three positions now being taken over by women. By scrapping off a parameter that elevated outward appearance to a position of formidable power, Miss America joins the clarion call echoing across the globe, chanting “Me too!"
