This Self-Driving Volvo Concept Is A Bedroom, Living Room And Office On Wheels

Volvo Cars

Volvo recognises that the only thing worse than commercial air travel is driving through traffic jams, so the company has developed the 360c autonomous concept car, which it proposes can whisk you to your destination even while you sleep.

Like the pre-air travel Pullman sleeper train cars, the 360c configures for comfortable bedding down while en route, letting you shorten your trip while you take advantage of traffic-free overnight roads.

The cabin of this all-electric self-driving module is also configurable as a mobile office or as a living room entertainment space.

Unlike your living room, however, there's no giant flat-screen TV looming over the space because Volvo anticipates that you'll be able to project work PowerPoints or Avengers: Infinity War onto the car's windows, depending on your situation.

“Domestic air travel sounds great when you buy your ticket, but it really isn’t. The 360c represents what could be a whole new take on the industry,” said Mårten Levenstam, senior vice president of corporate strategy at Volvo Cars.

“The sleeping cabin allows you to enjoy premium comfort and peaceful travel through the night and wake up refreshed at your destination. It could enable us to compete with the world’s leading aircraft makers.”

The company says that the 360c would be ideal for trips between New York and Washington DC, Houston and Dallas, and Los Angeles and San Diego, when a flight often takes longer than driving.

Volvo isn't providing specifications for the 360c or its performance capabilities, so we're left to ponder its huge flip-up doors and Blade Runner styling.

“We regard the 360c as a conversation starter, with more ideas and answers to come as we learn more,” Levenstam said. “Yet we believe fully autonomous drive has the potential to fundamentally change our society in many ways. It will have a profound impact on how people travel, how we design our cities and how we use infrastructure.”
